Picture of woman without hijab on poster, film festival canceled in Iran

Iranian authorities have canceled a film festival after a picture of an actress without a hijab was printed on its poster. The country's state-owned media IRNA reported this news.A short film festival was scheduled to take place in Iran next September. The Iranian Short Film Association (ISFA) released a poster on the occasion. A picture of the country's actress Susan Taslimi was used in the poster.
The image was taken from Susan Taslimi's film 'The Death of Yadgard' released in 1982. The actress is seen without hijab in the film. And the Iranian government has objected to this.
Iran's Ministry of Culture ordered the cancellation of the 13th edition of the Short Film Festival organized by ISFA last Saturday, according to IRNN's report. The order was issued after the festival poster violated the law by using a picture of a woman without a hijab.
Islamic Revolution took place in Iran in 1979. After that, from 1983, the wearing of hijab was made compulsory for the women of the country. By law, women in Iran must wear the hijab or cover their heads in public. Iranian women have protested this law at various times.
Following the death of Kurdish girl Masa Amani in Iranian police custody in September last year, the strict hijab policy has come under renewed scrutiny. Police arrested 22-year-old Masa for not wearing hijab in public.
Due to this death, violent protests spread across Iran. Many women have defied this strict law in protest by going public without the hijab. However, the Iranian government was strict in suppressing the protests from the beginning. Hundreds of protesters were killed. More than a thousand people have been arrested.
